Dikeman lost reader's trust during the recall campaign

Letters to the Editor | from the Eureka Reporter | by Adam Jamin | Jun 4, 2006

Dear Editor,

I am supporting Paul Gallegos for District Attorney. Mr. Dikeman lost my trust during the failed recall attempt. When he announced his candidacy, Mr. Dikeman very convincingly stated he was not running against Paul Gallegos, but was appearing on the ballot only to prevent another candidate from winning. He repeated that statement many times in many places. Then, two weeks before the election, when the recall was predicted to be a close vote, Mr. Dikeman reversed himself, suddenly announcing that he was better qualified and Mr. Gallegos should be replaced as unfit. He finally came out in favor of the recall. That’s a dirty, nasty, low-down trick.

That’s what’s known as an opportunistic flip-flop and characterizes many politicians and would-be politicians. Dikeman appears to be a slick lawyer/politician, promoting primarily his interests, not the public’s.

Paul Gallegos, on the other hand, has not, to my knowledge, been duplicitous. He has always remained true to the principles he says he believes in. I believe he does his job fairly and regards that “No one is above the law.”

I believe him when he chides Mr. Dikeman for losing nine of his past 13 cases and Mr. Dikeman hems and haws like a schoolchild caught in a lie.

I believe Paul Gallegos when he tells us that he personally prosecuted and won all nine of his trials. I don’t believe Mr. Dikeman when he says, “Paul has no experience as a prosecutor.”

In fact, my regard for Mr. Dikeman’s dishonesty leads me to say that if I am called for jury duty, I would have to answer truthfully that I could not be impartial to him. His statements have no worth to me.

There is no question in my mind; Paul Gallegos is the better candidate for the office.
